UPDATE – Industrial Action in Finland

March 22, 2010 11.00 CET:

The strike negotiation team has reached a compromise and accepted the Councillor General’s proposal. The stevedores’ strike action is called off as of March 19, 2010. The stevedores are obligated to return to their workplaces and allocated shifts latest by March 23, 2010.

A return to the standard conditions is expected to take another week since the hauliers have a significant amount of import backlog to clear before capacity is released for export shipments.

We continue to experience fierce competition for the empty export units and ferry slots. We will continue keeping our customers informed via our Customer Service and Sales departments.

Finnish port workers to end export crippling strike

March 15, 2010 17.30 CET:

The stevedores’ strike action is continuing. The next round of negotiations will be held Tuesday March 16, starting at 12:30 CET.

This prolonged action continues to cause shipping delays due to blocked routes and significantly increased freight costs, with an ever-increasing impact on our ability to despatch material from our biorefinery in Oulu, Finland. We are endeavouring to keep our customers supplied, and will notify delays and disruptions through our Customer Service and Sales teams.

This prolonged action continues to lead to shipping delays due to blocked routes and significantly increased freight costs, with an ever-increasing impact on our ability to despatch material from our biorefinery in Oulu, Finland. We continue to endeavour to keep our customers supplied, and will notify them of delays or disruptions through our Customer Service and Sales channels.

We expect the above conditions to continue to impact our ability to receive and despatch goods from our biorefinery in Oulu, Finland leading to delays due to blocked shipping routes and significantly increased freight costs. We will endeavour to keep our customers supplied, and will notify them of delays or disruptions through our Customer Service and Sales channels. Our multi-site capability puts us in a good position to support these situations, as we have proven in the past.

March 2, 2010 19.45 PM CET:

Reports indicate that the Finnish Transport workers Union (AKT) and the Finnish Employers Federation of Road Transport (ALT) have reached an agreement and the strike action is ended. The risk of strike action by the stevedores is still ongoing.

Helsingin Sanomat – Transport strike over

March 2, 2010 10.00 AM CET:

Reports indicate that negotiations between the Finnish Transport workers Union (AKT) and the Finnish Employers Federation of Road Transport (ALT) regarding truck and bus drivers’ wage and work conditions have failed and, consequently industrial action began on March 2, 2010 at 17:00 CET for an indefinite period. There is a further risk of strike action by the stevedores who have put in place an overtime ban and work-to-rule with further negotiations taking place.

We expect the above conditions to impact our ability to receive and despatch goods at our biorefinery in Oulu, Finland. Competition for alternative freight options is intense and costs may be prohibitive for both customers and Arizona Chemical. Nevertheless, we will endeavour to keep our customers supplied, and will notify them of delays or disruptions through our Customer Service and Sales channels. Goods movements to and from our biorefinery in Sandarne, Sweden are expected to be unaffected by the industrial action, although recent bad weather in Sweden has also disrupted goods movements. We anticipate additional demand pressure on Sandarne as we use the flexibility that it provides to keep Oulu customers supplied.

We will continue to keep this page updated with further news as it becomes available.
