On Wednesday morning, September 15, an incident occurred at the Oulu plant of Arizona Chemical in Northern Finland that resulted in the death of a contract worker and injuries to three other workers.
The now-deceased worker died at the scene of the incident. One worker is now being treated at a local hospital for serious injuries. The others involved in the incident received minor injuries.
Arizona Chemical, a refiner of tall oil and turpentine, had taken a storage tank out of service for repairs and cleaning. The victim, an employee of sub-contractor Oulun Terkos, was performing welding work.
The exact cause of the accident, which took place at approximately 8.30 am yesterday morning in Oulu’s Nuottasaari industrial area, is still unconfirmed. The tank was damaged, but there was no additional damage to the plant and it remains operational.
“We are supporting and participating with the authorities in the investigation, but our priority is to support the families of the victims and do all we can to help them through this tragedy,” Rauno Luttinen, Oulu plant manager for Arizona Chemical, says.
Crisis meetings have been held for Arizona Chemical employees as well as its contractors’ employees on-site.
The National Health and Safety Organization, the Safety Technology Authority (Tukes), Accident Investigation Board and local police are continuing to work with the Company to conclude the investigation.
