2010 Corporate Commitment to Sustainability: Safety and Emergency Planning, Environmental Responsibility: p. 3–5
Arizona Chemical's Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Policy sets the standard for company environmental performance. We take an integrated approach and hold health and safety at our facilities, as well as protection of the environment, as core values that are critical to the success of our business. We are committed to promoting the safety and wellness of our employees at work and at home and encourage and empower employees to actively participate in safety on and off the job.
While GRI considers some facets of safety in the Social category, we have expanded our approach to environmental sustainability to include this aspect. The Global EHS Director leads our EHS efforts and reports directly to the CEO. In addition, the Vice President, Operations also reports directly to the CEO and is responsible for achieving world class performance in our manufacturing facilities. With this reporting structure, top management maintains an active and visible role in ensuring a safe workplace. Senior management sets goals for EHS performance as do individual facilities to address site specific issues.
Our safety vision, “Nobody Gets Hurt,” is the foundation of everything we do. From our point of view, safety cannot and will not be compromised at any time by Arizona Chemical employees or contractors. We work safely, watch out for each other, and report and correct all unsafe conditions and situations. In 2010 we focused on Life Critical Processes that were launched in 2011 to improve our already robust policies. We established a new position of Global Process Safety Engineer whose primary responsibility is to develop and support implementation of our global Process Safety Management System. Our system will be benchmarked against well-recognized standards and customized to reflect best practices.
Arizona Chemical is committed to fostering sustainable business practices through environmental stewardship. For example, all our facilities have implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS). In the US, we adhere to EPA’s Performance Track model, consistent with ISO 14001. Our Sandarne, Sweden; Oulu, Finland; and Chester-Le-Street, UK facilities are active members of the Responsible Care Program which includes self auditing and reporting. We use several internationally recognized standards, including ISO 14001 and 9001 and OHSAS 18001, as applicable and were proud to add Savannah Technology to the ISO 9001 certification. We also consider sustainability issues when selecting raw material and other suppliers, energy and natural resource consumption, and the potential impacts and benefits to our communities in the manufacture and use of our products.
The Company does not have a separate policy on biodiversity as there are no known impacts from its operations, which are primarily based on by-products from other industries. Additionally, we have negligible land assets.
Facility based EHS training programs are designed and implemented to ensure all personnel whose work may create a significant impact upon the environment have received appropriate training. This training covers compliance, awareness topics and competency as well as site specific issues.
We seek continuous improvement and track EHS performance through auditing against best practice standards and use of our global Business Processes. Official reports trigger corrective action planning and implementation when needed. To ensure that our standards are widely accepted best practices, we will have a third party audit of our safety systems in 2011.
These efforts have resulted in significant improvements to our environmental operations, with notable decreases in our environmental events, odor complaints, hazardous waste generation rates, energy use, GHG emissions, and VOC emissions.
For environmental improvement and cost savings, the Company actively seeks to reduce its transportation impact. Consolidation of operations to minimize manufacturing transfers, mode switching to bulk systems, and technology upgrades to completely fill loads are a few examples of the activities undertaken by our Procurement and Supply Chain Teams to minimize this impact. |
