Arizona Chemical's bio-sustainable polymer chemistry has direct applicability in the formulation of sticks, lotions and sprays for today's sun care products. With increased market desire for sustainable personal care solutions, our bio-sustainable polymers can be used to form films that provide water and sweat repellency, enhance sun protection factor (SPF) and stabilize formulations with high loadings of sunscreen actives. The products are non-tacky on the skin and aesthetics are not compromised. When used as rheology modifiers, our polymers can gel either the oil or water phase and allow the formation of surfactant free oil-in-gelled water and water-in-gelled oil emulsions. At high polymer loadings, clear or opaque, solid sunscreen active sticks are possible for topical application.

For water repellency, and SPF enhancement, SYLVACLEAR™ polymers are melted at about a 2% loading into either the oil phase or a glycol containing aqueous phase for incorporation into the formulation. Stable emulsions are formed when SYLVACLEAR™ polymers are used at higher loadings to gel the first phase followed by emulsification with the second phase. In many cases, surfactants can be eliminated, this gelled emulsion approach can further reduce the tendency to re-emulsify upon contact with water.
