Skin Care
The human body is replete with polymers that belong to a general class of chemistry known as polyamides. Enzymes, collagens (skin and connective tissue), hair and elastin are all examples of important biological structures that are built of polyamides commonly known as proteins.
Arizona Chemical's bio-sustainable polyamide chemistry has direct applicability in the formulation of creams, lotions and sticks for skin care products. With demonstrated improvement in skin hydration levels, our versatile chemistry can be used as a film forming additive to increase water repellency or as rheology modifier to form surfactant free oil-in-gelled water and water-in-gelled oil emulsions that are non-tacky and offer excellent aesthetics. At high (>15%) polymer loadings, clear, solid gelled emollient sticks are possible for topical application.
Arizona Chemical's Specialty Polymers form thermo-reversible gels with liquids in which a second, incompatible phase, can then be dispersed to form an emulsion. Our products are technically not surfactants so HLB value does not apply. More appropriately our technology can be described using the term "gel dispersion" to describe a mechanism where a gelled phase is dispersed into a non-gelled phase or vice versa.
For water repellency SYLVACLEAR™ polymers are melted at about a 2% loading into either the oil phase or a glycol containing aqueous phase for incorporation into the formulation. At higher loadings stable emulsions are formed when SYLVACLEAR™ polymers are used to gel the first phase followed by emulsification with the second phase. In many cases surfactants can be greatly reduced or eliminated.
