Arizona Chemical is the leading biorefiner of pine chemicals with the largest fractionation and upgrade capacity worldwide. With over 1,000 employees worldwide, Arizona Chemical has its North American principal executive office in Jacksonville, Florida and its European principal executive office in Almere, The Netherlands.

We have ten manufacturing plants located in the US and Europe. Our direct sales cover all regions of the world and our network of agents and distributors serves our customer’s local needs around the globe.

Our European research and development unit is located in Almere, The Netherlands and North American unit is located in Savannah, Georgia.

Our Management Team 

Kees Verhaar

Kees Verhaar, President and CEO, joined Arizona Chemical in August 2008. His experience includes nearly 30 years in executive leadership in the global chemical industry, most recently as Executive Vice President of Hexion Specialty Chemicals, where he was responsible for the company’s epoxy and coating resins business. Prior to joining Hexion in 2006, he held senior management positions at companies that included Noveon, Inc, Johnson Polymer, DeVoe Coatings, and ESHA Group. Kees received his Masters in Economics from the University of Amsterdam.
David Cowfer, Vice President, Human Resources and Communications, joined Arizona Chemical in 1999.  He has over 28 years of human resources leadership experience with private and public companies, including International Paper, Eaton Corporation and Westinghouse. He is a published author and guest speaker on leadership and organizational development. Dave is a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Journalism.
Dick Stuyfzand

Dick Stuyfzand, Vice President and General Counsel, joined Arizona Chemical in January 2009. He has over 20 years of international experience in various industries with private and public companies, including a major law firm and Royal Ahold in The Netherlands and Cadbury Schweppes in the UK. Prior to joining Arizona Chemical he was Legal Director of Schweppes International. Dick earned his law degree from the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands.

Frederic Jung Frederic Jung, Vice President and CFO, joined Arizona Chemical in December 2008. From 2005 to 2008, he served as Corporate Controller of Nalco Company, a USD 4 billion global producer of specialty chemicals and services for water and waste treatment and industrial processes. He has also held the position of CFO for Nalco’s EMEA operations. Prior to joining Nalco, Frederic held several positions with Bombardier Aerospace, Waste Management, Inc. and SAE Americas, Inc. Frederic has an MA in Finance from a leading business school in France and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.
Gary Reed

Gary Reed, Vice President, Operations, began his career with Union Camp in 1982 at the Savannah, GA, Pulp and Paper mill where he held a number of operational management roles.  He moved to Union Camp Chemicals (acquired by Arizona Chemical in 1999) in 1998.  He has been involved in many areas of the business including Site Manager – United Kingdom, Inks & Coatings Business Manager, Director of Marketing, and Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  Gary was Vice President and General Manager, North America, from January 2008 until December 2010 when he assumed responsibility for global operations.  Gary holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida.

Juhani Tuovinen

Juhani Tuovinen, Vice President, Commercial, began his career at United Paper Mills in 1980 working in R&D and commercial management roles in Finland and in Germany.  In nearly 30 years in the chemical industry he has held a number of key sales and marketing positions with Arizona Chemical including European Business Manager for Paper Chemicals from 1997 till 1999, European Business Manager for Adhesives May 1999 to June 2005, and Managing Director Europe – February 2005 to February 2007.  He served as Vice President, Managing Director - Europe since 2002 and has been in his current role since December 2010.  Juhani graduated with Masters degree from the Helsinki University of Technology with a concentration in Chemical Engineering/Polymer Chemistry.

Carl Bilgrien, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer joined Arizona Chemical November 2010.  He was the Vice President, Research and Development - Materials and Packaging Technologies, for W.R. Grace from 2007 to 2010, where he led the global Research and Development team.  Prior to W. R. Grace, Carl spent 2 years as Vice President of R&D with Aspen Aerogels—a nanotechnology start-up, and 20 years with Dow Corning in a range of technical and business management roles. Carl has a Chemistry degree from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Florida.
