Arizona Chemical Receives Safety Awards from CSX and Union Pacific

JACKSONVILLE, FL — 04/20/10 – Arizona Chemical Company, LLC, has recently learned that it is the recipient of two prestigious awards for chemical transportation safety.

For the sixth time in 10 years, Arizona Chemical earned the Chemical Safety Excellence Award (CSEA) from CSX Transportation, one of the largest freight railroads in the U.S. To qualify for the award, each winner shipped 600 or more railcars during 2009 on CSXT, with no non-accidental hazardous material releases through the entire year.

“The CSEA recipients understand the best practices of chemical safety, and they have demonstrated a commitment to those practices and strong industry leadership among their peers,” said Clarence Gooden, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at CSX. “Safety is a core value for CSX, and we appreciate the winners’ help in making CSX one of the safest freight transportation companies in North America.”

The company also has been named a recipient of Union Pacific Railroad’s 14th annual Pinnacle Award for chemical transportation safety. The Pinnacle Award annually recognizes companies that have implemented successful prevention and corrective plans and have achieved a rate of zero non-accident releases (NARs) for shipments of regulated hazardous materials. This is the first time Arizona Chemical has received this award.

“This is Union Pacific’s opportunity to acknowledge and thank our customers for their continuing efforts to eliminate chemical releases from rail cars,” said Diane Duren, vice president and general manager – chemicals. “Rail is the safest way to haul the chemicals that Americans use every day, whether it is chlorine for drinking water or fertilizer for our farms that help feed the world.”

For Arizona Chemical, receiving these awards is a validation of the company’s commitment to safety excellence throughout its operations. “We take our responsibility to be a leader in chemical transportation safety very seriously,” said Philip Wiegreffe, Director U.S. Operations, Arizona Chemical.

“Across our company, we have highly trained and experienced employees who work closely with both of these railroad companies to make sure the products we’re shipping gets delivered safely, and it’s great to see their work recognized by two of the leading railroads in America,” Wiegreffe said.

In 2009, Arizona Chemical shipped 1.25 billion pounds of product by rail from its U.S. facilities in Panama City, Fla.; Savannah and Valdosta, Ga.; and Dover, Ohio.
