NIORT, FRANCE – May 11, 2012 – To strengthen its position in key growth markets in Europe, Arizona Chemical has announced that it will undertake a reorganization at Niort to focus the plant on making products for the adhesives and tires markets.
Because of steady declines in demand for phenolic publication inks in Europe and the associated low utilization rates at Niort, the company has decided to exit the phenolic publications inks market in Europe and cease production of these resins at Niort.
The decision to exit the publication inks resins market is part of the company’s larger growth strategy and will allow the company to invest additional resources into making resin tackifiers at Niort. “The resin tackifier products made at Niort go into markets that are growing and healthy, such as tire-tread enhancement additives, so it makes sense to invest our time and resources into those operations at Niort,” explained Kees Verhaar, President and CEO.
Laurent Mouhout, Niort Plant Manager, said that there are several positions associated with the work that will no longer be done at the plant once they cease making phenolic inks resins. “The company expects these positions will be made redundant, and we have already begun discussions on the impact of the decision with Niort’s union leadership,” he explained.
“The company is committed to ensuring that Niort remains a competitive and successful manufacturing site for Arizona Chemical,” Mouhout added. “Today’s decision means that we will be better equipped to improve the plant’s ability to compete in global growth markets for the long term.”
The transition is expected to take several months.
The Niort plant was built in 1960 and aquired by Arizona Chemical in 1995. It employs 59 people.
